Wind and Energy

It had started as a windy weekend here in Northern Colorado. The good news about the wind in this part of the world is that we’re starting to harness it’s power with wind farms – large arrays of beautiful wind mills that capture the wind and turn it into electricity. And, fortunately, it’s not always windy here in Fort Collins. We have many beautiful, calm days.

The bad news is that yesterday, Sunday was one of those relatively calm days for the Fort Collins, “Kites in the Park” festival. Peter and I live a couple of miles from Spring Canyon Park, so we decided to walk over to the festival to enjoy several thousand people, of all ages, flying kites together. Still, everyone was in great spirits. When the wind would come up, so would the kites. When the wind went down, only those kites that had made it high into the sky were still up. But it was sunny and beautiful and no one seemed to mind. It was a chance for celebrating Spring.

While watching the kites (and attempting to photograph them) I was reminded of the power of the wind and how similar it is to energy work. We can’t see it, but we feel it and know that it works. The wind drives those huge three-bladed windmills, turning its power into a different form.  Energy work harmonizes oscillating fields within the body, teaching the body how to regulate itself. And many do feel Divine Openings Healing – as heat, pulling, or a sense of movement – like the wind – in their bodies. We’re learning more and more about how to use both for good – and that’s exciting news, indeed!

Piano Tuning

I saw my client, Ricky, yesterday. It had been several years since I had heard from her. When she called to schedule, she said she had been dealing with a headache for ten days straight.

As I looked at her in standing, I could feel the sadness emanating from her body and the posture that she displayed confirmed my suspicions – depressed sternum, rounded shoulders, shallow breath. “Have you been stressed recently?” I asked, knowing what the answer would be.

“You could say that,” she said, but didn’t offer more. My sense was not to pry, so I invited her to lie down on the table as I set to work.

“Ricky, I’ve been doing a new form of energy work that I’ve developed since I last saw you. I think it might help you. Would that be O.K.?” I thought she would be open to my suggestion, and she quickly consented.

I settled onto my rolling stool at end of the table and gently cradled her heels in my hands. Her abdomen heaved as she suppressed sobs, and tears rolled down the sides of her face into her ears. I disengaged for a moment and gave her a tissue, then went back to holding her feet. As the wave of sadness lifted, I went to her head to do some bodywork on her neck, head and jaw.

“So does taking all this crap away from me make you sick?” she queried.

“No,” I answered. “I’m not taking your energy or giving you mine. All I’m doing is balancing the energy that you already have.”

Ricky thought for a moment, then smiled in understanding. “You’re just tuning my piano, right?”

“Right.” When she left, her countenance was different, her headache was gone, and I had a sense that she would have more resources to be in her life. Many times, we can tune our own piano through mediation, prayer, Divine Openings, consciously raising our vibration. But other times, like Ricky found out yesterday, we can use some help. For me, it was a blessing to be able to do that for her…

You Must Focus…

I remember his words clearly – “You must focus!” The gifted French Osteopath and my visceral manipulation teacher, Didier Pratt was emphatic about focusing one’s attention in order to detect the subtle movement of the internal organs. Feeling the highly energetic quality of visceral motility challenged most of us in the class at first. Then, as we got used to the feeling and could make sense of the information coming from the body on the table, detecting the movement got much easier. Over the course of 20 days of intense classes, I got really good at it, and it remains a staple of my practice today (twelve years later).

As I practiced visceral manipulation over the years, the experience tuned my hands so that later, when I  began doing Energy Healing, my sensory awareness was ready to kick-in. Still, feeling the vibration of a client’s oscillating fields takes focus and attention. It’s not difficult – and everyone can do it – the focus part is just about being fully present in one’s body and noticing the sensations that come to the hands to be recognized and interpreted.

When I taught that first Energy Healing class, some of the participants thought this ability was almost magical – that somehow I had a gift that no one could learn. Passing my hand over the student’s body from head to feet, I showed them how to feel the strength of the field – hot places, empty places, prickly places – I call it scanning. Soon, they could do it too. As the class broke into pairs to practice, I sat and watched the delight, heard the laughter as each person discovered that when they focused, they felt the vibrations and then quickly learned to interpret what those vibrations meant.

Focusing is usually associated with photography or vision. When an image is in focus, it’s clear, sharp, easily seen. The word is rarely used to describe the sense of touch. Yet, as someone who has learned to focus their sense of touch, I can say it opens to the senser a world of information just waiting to be recognized.

Planting Seeds

Tiny Kale

I’m new to vegetable gardening. This is my third year.  I celebrated Earth Day by planting seeds – wild kale, radishes, lettuce greens.

One thing I’ve learned in my short tenure as a gardener is that I must be patient. The seeds come up in their own time. There are so many factors influencing the appearance of those tiny green plants. Temperature, sunlight, moisture, genetics all play their part.

It’s the same with Energy Healing…or even bodywork. The body needs time to assimilate the new information and to shift.

I find that sometimes, clients expect miracles. They have tried traditional allopathic medicine and when the pain meds and surgery didn’t help, they turn to alternative therapies expecting them to work immediately.

The therapy always works – but just like planting seeds, it often takes time. And I may not ever see the results. They may move on and I won’t hear of the changes until one day a new client calls because their friend told them how much better they felt. And I don’t need to be there or even know…

Moving Energy!

I have a new creative medium – YouTube! After I taught myself (with the help of Lynda.com) to edit the videos for my online healing course, I decided to try my hand at a promotional piece. Lola Jones suggested it. She felt that a video would help people to feel the energy of the course.

It’s one thing to edit a video for the purposes of teaching – it’s quite another to tell a story in a short piece – like three minutes or so. The video on The Healing Course page of this site was my first attempt. I wrote a script, went through clips and photos from the course and even added music.

It blows me away to find all the resources I needed to complete this project on the Internet. When I showed Peter the video – and bear in mind that he is extremely computer savvy – he said: “Where did you get the music? That’s awesome!” Smugly, I said,“I Googled “background music for videos.” I got pages of hits.” What was even more amazing was when I uploaded the video onto YouTube, within an hour there had been about twenty views! Now, I realize twenty views is not exactly a viral video, but I wondered as I watched the number rise (it’s about 400 now after a month) how people found the video so quickly. I guess through searches just like I found the music…

Anyway, this week Lola recommended that I try another video of just clips from the class. Something that would strongly communicate the energy. So yesterday, I sat down and tried it again. There are a few things I want to change for the final product, but here’s what I came up with. What do you think?

Man, I would have never dreamed that I would have so much fun producing videos!??? I mean I paint and now do digital art. I weave and knit. I cook. I garden. I play piano. But videos? And here’s the thing – it’s really, really fun! What a great metaphor for moving energy – videos. Who would’a thought?

Harmony Equals Health – Part Two

“We may look at disease as such out-of-tune behavior of one or another of our organs of the body. In Harmony Equals Health – Part One, I talked about harmonic resonance – that natural state where all of the oscillating fields in a system are in-phase. Today, I want to share my views on how energy healing can help to restore the balance of those oscillating systems when they get out of phase.

Harmonic oscillating systems have a natural tendency. They want to remain in harmony . The interlocking fields of all of the oscillators in our bodies will normally stay aligned.  But they can get out of balance when they are exposed to some kind of disturbance such as chronic stress, injury, emotional trauma – anything that interacts with our field of resonance. A big one is suppressed emotions.

When emotions are not fully felt, they tend to go into the resonant field of the body and, over time, they create a focus of disturbance that can even spread to neighboring fields in the body. When that focus of disturbance is removed – say in the example of unfelt emotions being recognized and experienced – the body will want to return to it’s natural state of harmonic resonance. However, if the disturbance has been long-standing or severe enough, the body may need help.  That’s where vibrational therapies come in.

How does vibrational healing help restore harmonic resonance? Well, there’s a very cool phenomenon called Rhythm Entrainment – the basis for Physical (and I daresay emotional) Energy Healing. It goes something like this: even when the natural frequency of similar oscillators isn’t exactly the same, nature seems to find it more efficient to direct them to line up. Fireflies will blink of and off in unison, electronic circuits will oscillate together, picking one frequency to lock onto – usually the fastest one. Rhythm entrainment is the natural tendency to conserve energy in oscillators of similar frequencies by lining them up.

I like to think of my Energy Healing as a strong harmonizing rhythm that entrains my client’s oscillating fields to return to their natural state of balance. I’m not sending them “energy” or taking away “bad energy” but I am introducing a set of healing frequencies that reminds that body how to return to its natural state of health. Really, it’s just information that guides the body back to what it already knows.

The Energy of Cleaning Out the Closet

I’m new to blogging, although I’ve been a professional writer for a number of years. What I’m loving about the “Discipline of the Blog” is that there is a very Zen-like quality to writing regularly. Before starting my blog, I read several short books on how to do it effectively and I found that, pretty much without exception, the guidance from the most successful bloggers is this: stay focused on some particular topic.

Since I’m teaching energy healing, these days, I decided to focus my blog on energy in all of its aspects. Now I will admit that since energy is the basis for all of what we call “reality” here in the time-space continuum, that’s a pretty broad topic. However, I’m enjoying the thought processes that go into reframing many of my daily activities as a way of explaining energy and vibration for the blog. And, those of you who blog regularly can relate to what I’m starting to discover – the blog needs care and feeding (ooooh, another blog topic related to energy!).

So anyway, after returning from a fabulous weekend trip with Peter I started unpacking, and decided to get rid of some clothes in my closet that I haven’t worn in awhile. I bought a new outfit while I was away and realized that I literally had no more room in my closet for it. The decision to work on the closet has been percolating for a few weeks with spring coming and the fact that I was having trouble finding things in there – I noticed this when I was packing to leave for the aforementioned trip! So it’s time…

Have you noticed how good it feels to clean out old stuff that you’ve been hanging onto? To decide to let it go and in so doing, make room for new things to come into your life? That old jacket that I haven’t worn in years could be the vintage piece of clothing that a college student loves. Or I can gift it to an organization that provides business clothes to single moms for job interviews. It a great jacket, it’s just that my tastes have changed over the years and I don’t wear it anymore

Energy is all about movement. When my closet is too full, things in there become stagnant, wrinkled, hidden. By making space and releasing the old that no longer serves me, I can create the space for the new to come to me.

I once heard someone say that the Universe abhors a vacuum. I’ve always loved that phrase. By creating the vacuum of an empty closet (or at least a less full closet), I invite the vibration of the new into my life and the energy moves…Whether it’s clothes, beliefs, relationships, or anything else that has been hanging around too long, I invite you to make space for the Universe to fill it. I think you’ll be glad you did.

Harmony Equals Health – Part One

In an earlier post (Do You Resonate?), I talked about fundamental resonance – that is, when two oscillating structures have the same natural frequency, it takes very little energy to influence them to vibrate together. In today’s post, I want to talk about another kind of resonance that I think is much more commonly seen with living organisms.

Harmonic resonance happens when the natural frequencies of oscillators are proportional to each other. In the diagram below, you can see how this works. The top string is vibrating at it’s fundamental frequency where the second string is vibrating at a harmonic frequency two times that of the fundamental frequency. Then three times, four times and so on. This drawing actually represents what are called harmonic nodes. When you pluck the string in the very center, it will vibrate at it’s fundamental frequency, but when you pluck it a fourth of it’s length from the end, it will vibrate two times faster.

If you have separate structures that vibrate proportionately to each other, they are said to be in harmony. Music is one of easiest ways to appreciate harmonic resonance. Most of us can easily tell when one instrument in a band is out of tune with the other instruments. So, for our purposes right now, just think of structures being in tune with each other as a harmonized system.

But what does this have to do with the body and energy healing? Well, we have many different kinds of oscillators in our bodies. And the natural frequencies of these oscillators go from relatively slow to very fast. As a general rule, the smaller the structure, the faster it oscillates. Here’s a list of just a few of these oscillators:

  • The whole human body 7.5 – 8 cycles per second
  • Breath – 12 breaths per minute
  • Heart – 70 beats per minute
  • Cell – 103 Cycles per second
  • Molecule – 109 Cycles per second
  • Atom – 1015 Cycles per second
  • Atomic Nucleus – 1022 Cycles per second

So here’s a very simplified theory about harmonic resonance in the body: When oscillators vibrate in harmony with each other – basically in phase – the system tends to cruise along in a state of natural health. When they get out of phase, the body can eventually manifest illness. Events that can produce disharmony are physical trauma, surgeries, emotional trauma, chronic stress, and substance abuse among many others.

The good news is the body wants to be healthy and it wants to maintain its normal harmonic rhythms. And when it does get out of balance, given the right kinds of information, it can return to a state of harmony. I think we often know when we’re out of balance and I think that the more we become aware of the factors that influence harmonic resonance – either for good or bad – we can avert physical illness before it manifests outwardly.

Food Vibes and a Meditation for the Senses

I love good food.  I love to cook it and I love to eat it.  I once dumped a guy after two dates when I offered to cook him dinner. As I was preparing to saute onions for a cajun dish, he turned up his nose and said “No onions, they make me crazy!” Huh? What do you mean they make you crazy? Are you allergic? “No, they just make me crazy!” That was our last date…How can anyone not like sauteed onions? Well, maybe I was a little harsh, but I don’t think it would have worked out anyway. On that same date, he took me to the Hialeah Race Track and taught me how to handicap horses. I picked the winning horse, but he bet on it to show. Have I mentioned yet that I’m psychic?

Food is such a sensual part of our human experience. It helps to define cultures; it’s probably safe to say that food is a distinctive component of all cultures around the world. It serves to bring people together. Sharing a meal is one of the most basic and powerful ways to share of oneself.

So what is it about the energy around food? Yes, I could go into the whole thing about tastebuds and the five known tastes (sweet, sour, bitter, salty and umami). Yes, I could explain the vibrations of the food molecules and how they interact with our nose and tongue.  But I’m not going to. I’d just say that I think the attention we give our food is symbolic of how we feel about ourselves.

At home, I take great care in preparing my food. Peter and I cook together most nights. Sometimes he plans the meal, sometimes I do. We both chop and slice, we both cook at the stove, grill or oven. We both clean up. It’s our time together after work, a special time to talk, taste and nourish ourselves – a reward after a long day.

When I go into a restaurant, I’d like to think that I can feel the energy coming from a well-prepared dish. And I try to spend a few moments looking at it, enjoying the textures, colors and smells before I even taste it. Only after I’ve used my other senses, do I allow myself that first bite.

What does this have to do with energy healing? Well, all feeling, including the “common” senses, are about emitting and picking up vibration. So paying attention to them sparks our sensory awareness and helps us to use those senses while we’re doing the healing.

So when you sit down (and please do sit down!) to your next meal, I’d suggest the following: Feel the vibration of your food before you take your first bite. Appreciate all of the people that participated in getting it to you – the farmers, shippers, wholesalers, stores, chefs – however it made it to that plate in front of you. As you take your first bite, allow yourself to truly taste. Is it salty, sweet, savory – a hint of bitter? Those are the vibrations of the food and the events that made it possible to get it there. As you swallow, invite the food to gently assimilate into your body, nourishing the organs and cells. Stop and take a breath between bites. Put down your fork a few times – make it a rich and powerful experience…and let me know how it goes.
