Ode to the Blogosphere

Blog Love – Zendala by Cathy Ulrich

Seven a.m.
Sitting at my Mac,
I check email,
click on blog notices.

Peter walks by.
“What’s happening
in the Blogosphere?”
he says.

“Oh, Madame Weebles
just got Freshly Pressed,
Le Clown was featured
on The Daily Post,
Clare went to Edinburgh,
Brigitte came back
from Woodstock,
and LameAdventures
is taking a break.”

“That’s nice,” he says.
Doesn’t know
the details,
but knows it’s
important to me.

Each day starts
with blogging.
More than writing posts,
I read,
like,
comment.
reply.

Sometimes, one comment,
sometimes back and forth.
It takes time
for me and them.

I don’t click “like”
unless I’ve read the post.
And I”d rather go
to their website
to click.
It raises their hits.

I’ll write a poem,
post a quote,
compose an essay.
Then go to my files.
find the right shot,
upload that.

Or create a mandala
on Painter,
trying not
to overload my readers
with too many posts.

I had no clue
how much I’d enjoy a
community of creatives.
Writers,
poets,
artists,
humorists,
explorers
of their inner
and outer
worlds.

Social media?
Yes,
but not like Facebook
and not like Twitter.

Blogging is people
taking the time
to write
or photograph
or paint
their lives,
their loves,
their passions.

It’s people
finding others
who share
these lives,
loves,
passions.

Or, learning
about lives
different
from their own.
My own.

It’s richness
in a
smaller world.
A world
that will never
be the same
for me since
I started my blog.

This poem and mandala are dedicated to all of you who share the blogosphere with me. To those who read and follow me and those who I read and follow. And to those who I have yet to meet. To all of you, thank you for this fabulous ride.

If you’re a blogger, why do you blog? What have you learned about yourself or others as a result of blogging? Is this experience what you thought it would be when you decided to start your blog? If not, how is it different?

Love,

Cathy

Cathy, my friend — thank you for mentioning me among these esteemed colleagues of the blogosphere. I don’t remember how I “met” you but I’m so glad I did. What you’ve just described here is what I do — you just always write it so poetically and beautifully. My hubby does the same thing — I tell him about this person or that, as if I see you guys on a regular basis and I guess we do, huh?

I never thought I would begin blogging. What I’ve learned is that there are so many wonderful, kind and intelligent people out there. And so talented! It has only reinforced what I’ve always believed — most of us are the same, most people are good and the world is way better than it is bad. I love this “addictive thing” I do otherwise I wouldn’t have met all of you. You are wonderful. Thank you. xxoo

I am so glad I “met” you, too! Your presence and words have so enriched my life and blogging experience. And I so agree, we do “see” each other on a regular basis. I was thinking about your post today about friends. I think I’ve learned over the years to look for my friends in unexpected ways and I so value you.

Most people are good and we get to see that day in and day out on the blogosphere. And I think it has opened my eyes to how many, many people are talented artists. Thank you Brig, for being here.

  4. You’re the best, Cathy. Thanks for the shoutout! Your reports to Peter sound like mine to Mr. Weebles. He knows the names, and has even read some blogs, but basically he knows it’s all important to me. I too love the blogging experience. I didn’t know what to expect when I started. I decided to try it just to get back into the practice of regular writing. I didn’t think I’d find so many wonderful, creative, interesting, kind, funny, talented, insightful people as I have. I find it hugely rewarding, and also humbling. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

      Weebs,
No, you’re the best! I love how we have similar experiences in our day. I had no idea that I would meet such great people here on WordPress. I started my blog as an extension of my Healing course and thought that I would write to expand the experiences of my students. Now blogging has turned into something I do just for me (and the blogosphere gets to listen in). I’ve met so many fantastic people. Thanks for being here (and coming back so soon! I so missed you when you were gone).

  5. Thank you.

Would you consider experimenting with longer lines in your verse? I find that, for me, it can intensify the way the line breaks interact with punctuation. I am not writing much verse atm, I love this explosion of verse creativity in you, and the way you relate the words to your pictures.

I started blogging a year ago as an extension of my journal, to record my personal journey. I did not think at the time that I would be reading or commenting so much on others’ blogs, it enriches the experience to have people commenting regularly, and I love the gentle encouraging way we have with each other.

I love our gentle encouraging ways, too, Clare. I also love reading about your personal journey as it enriches my own. I have considered experimenting with longer lines – playing with phrase – and I’m so new to poetry that I guess I’m just finding my way. Thanks for the question – I’ll play with that.

I value you and your feedback, dear Clare. Thank you.

    Cathy,
This is so very nice. I will share this on my Facebook page.

This is the first time I blog for myself, and not for a brand where I was either hired as a [ghost] writer, or strategist… For the first time, I am writing for myself, without compromises. I do find the experience enriching, but also, quite unnerving. I might seem quite transparent on my blog, but it was a learning curve… It’s when I realized how supportive the blogosphere was when it came to my son and his AD(H)D that I really decided to go full throttle with “transparency”. I have met great people, friends, and I am not going anywhere…
    What a lovely post,

Thank you for the share! I love the fact that you’re writing for yourself with no compromises. Your blog is a rich and affirming place both for your posts and for those of us who comment there. And I’m glad that you felt safe to go with the transparency of your blog. I’ve watched you move in that direction and it is wonderful and heartfelt (and wickedly funny at times).

Last week, I had dinner at a friend’s house with a fabulous professional violinist who teaches violin at our local University and is a native of Montreal. As I enjoyed his warmth and sense of humor, I thought of you and how much I enjoy knowing you and being a “Carnie.” i thought that this warm, smart, funny, musician from your home city showed me something about your values and where you’re coming from. It was wonderful.

  9. Thanks for the shout out Cathy, especially now when my site’s on hiatus — but rest assured that lame adventures continue to stalk me wherever I go. When I started blogging almost three years ago, the goal was to write the next post. I am a very deficient social networker, so it took me a while to realize that commenting is quid pro quo. I’m still flawed in that area, but I’ve been trying to improve. At times blogging has been a blessing, at other times, a curse. The blessing is two-fold — the sense of satisfaction when I write a post that is decent, which isn’t always the same as well-received, for I invariably fall short of my own standards. The second half of the blessing is becoming acquainted (and in a few special cases, good buds in the real world) with people I am certain I never would have met were it not for my site. The curse is the time involved and that comes dangerously close to draining the fun out of it. Fortunately, the benefits primarily outweigh the detriments, so my site remains a source of creative fulfillment as opposed to I dunno what, a stage 4 malignancy on my life? I figure this jaded New Yorker needed to add that to assure you that I’ve resisted going soft and fuzzy during my r&r. Again, thanks for the shout out, pal.

My pleasure. Lame Adventures is a favorite as I love New York and I love your quirky and fun perspective of it. It’s funny that you’d say you’re flawed at the commenting..I think you’re one of the best I’ve encountered – truly. You host fantastic commentary on your site and I always enjoy our discussions here, too (which I really appreciate).

It does take a lot of time – but I agree that the benefits outweigh the detriments. And don’t worry, I didn’t think you were going soft and fuzzy. Just enjoy your time off and I’ll look forward to post #351 after the election.

Nicely written. I like your ode. Being new to blogging (a couple of months now), I do wonder how many people who “like” a post actually read it, so I’m with you. I don’t like something unless I’ve read every word. I’m still trying to figure out how I feel about this blogging thing, but one benefit is that I seem to be writing more because of it, even on other projects. It’s nice to have that immediate creative outlet instead of waiting for months to get something published. Keeps me motivated…

      Hi James,
I so agree with you about having an immediate creative outlet. I find that I write a lot more and also take my camera with me a lot more. I try to put up some original artwork with every post, love photography and digital art (I use Corel Painter 12) and having a place to share it makes me want to do it more. I’ve explored many areas of art and creativity and it still evolves, but the blog has been so satisfying for me. Thanks so much for the “like” and comment here.

Very nice post! I love it. You really captured the essence of blogging. I started doing this a few months ago to ward off depression, as I have a job where I have long periods of nothing to do, and I am a very creative and silly person. Not the type who is happy being stuck in a corner for 10 hours every day with nothing to do until work hits my desk. I found that I love it a great deal. It’s exposed me to all kinds of wonderful people and their creativity. It’s also good for my husband, as he doesn’t have to bear all of my silliness alone. I spread it around, so he gets a break every so often. Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed.

  23. One of the interesting things about the blogosphere is how many individual voices are out there and how differently they/we speak. I started blogging in July 2009 because my agent told me to; as a professional writer, I resisted having to write unpaid and spend a lot of time on that. But my blog is growing every day with new followers worldwide. Oddly (to my mind), many of them are people in their 20s, as I’m in my mid-50s. But I’m happy they’re enjoying what I have to offer and some of the convo’s are really interesting.

I love an ode and this is a lovely one.

I found blogging to be as revelatory in that I love how friends who don’t blog don’t get it and think I am just telling people what I had for breakfast.

I started off doing an advice guide for London until I realised after about two posts it was a saturated market and then rememebred I was too lazy to get out and about enough and do everything London has to offer. So I just started putting down anything that came to mind, however silly, and found my niche, and it completely overwhelmed me when people followed and commented more importantly.

But I love everyone else and the talent I see blows me away, people’s writing is better than anything I can read from established sources, the humour is a hell of a lot funnier than any comedians who are successful. Just regular folk, working a job, raising a family, and they may or may not aspire to take their writing to another level, the fact it’s a hobby we are are sharing suits me fine.

I have never met them but you know them more than many ‘friends’ on Facebook, etc. It’s the modern day penpal and you can have loads of them without waiting for the post to arrive, just open your laptop.

What started as a filing cabinet has become a lifesaver and a network of support I have found no where else. Now I write to share common experiences with people who have advice and kind words to offer from their own ride through hell. I look forward to finding other writers to read, to reading, to writing, to liking, and to commenting and replying. My Reader is where I go when I need a reminder that I am not alone. I’ve learned what a beginner I am here on WordPress, easily disappointed by readers not ‘Liking’ a post, and only recently discovering that tags are important. Meanwhile, others here are friendly and excellent at managing their blogs and I am benefiting from their advice. Blogging is not what I thought it would be – it is much harder to attract people than I imagined – but I in the end I am satisfied to be posting works that were only gathering dust on my hard drive.

I think it just takes time. I remember my first few posts – sitting at the computer and waiting – no likes, no comments. I found the best way to get going is to find other people who share similar interests. Go to their sites, like, comment and follow. People here are very willing to reciprocate but sometimes you have to reach out yourself first. That makes it easier for them to find you, and you’re right tags and categories do make a big difference.
      Hope this helps,

I love this! People in my life don’t understand what it means to blog, and what, we as bloggers gain from it. But it’s so invaluable. I especially love the following lines:

    Blogging is people
    taking the time
    to write
    or photograph
    or paint
    their lives,
    their loves,
    their passions.

    It’s people
    finding others
    who share
    these lives,
    loves,
    passions.

But my most favorite is “people taking the time to [articulate in some form] their lives,

I started blogging about food because I felt cheated when I spent hours on a recipe and it was gone in 10 minutes flat. Now, thanks to photos and blogging, I can enjoy each recipe a little longer. 😀

But being able to share your gifts with others is so satisfying. Thanks so much for stopping by!

What a lovely poem! I blog because I can share my writing with people who understand my creative urges. Originally I started blogging in 2010 as a way to share my creative writing with my family and a few friends, but it’s gone global now (I have readers from as far away as India, Pakistan and Hong Kong) and I’m amazed at how this piece of technology makes my voice heard. Your poem is so sweet:) Love the hearts in the mandala too. Congrats on being Freshly Pressed.

I have to admit that I’m a huge fan of the web and technology. And in some ways it also feels old-fashioned and cozy to share the written word with people I’ve never “met” in person – like pen pals. Thank you for the good thoughts!

  47. Loved your poem. I started blogging with the aim to not only show my works but also to discuss topics in art and creativity with others. Though I don’t have that much time to comment, when I do, it feels like having a real conversation on interesting topics that doesn’t have a space on other social networks. I enjoy engaging with people who take the time to comment on my posts too but even a simple like is worthwhile since most blog readers do look at the whole post don’t just hit ‘Like’ I think. With more space people express themselves more freely and you can get to know a whole lot of new perspectives and insight into different opinions and lives.

To me blogging means talking without people being annoyed about chatting all day, letting my loved ones know what I’m up to in the far, avoiding my family to hand me the paper so I shut up at the breakfast table (all late starters, apart from me, who wakes up and is sparky).
It means no responsibilities apart from the ones I choose myself.
And it means a warm spot with a blanket to sit on write and read.

I found your blog under Freshly Pressed just now. I’m a relatively new Blogger (my blog is 6 days old). I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed this post a lot and some of the things you mentioned really resonated with me.

Because my blog is so new, I don’t really have comments or feedback as of yet. What I usually do is just check the stats from the previous day and start my new post for that day. Then I will continue it on my BlackBerry on the way to work while on the train.

Just to answer some of your questions from the last paragraph of the post….I wanted to do a blog for a while now..but just wasn’t sure about how to go about doing it. 6 days ago I just jumped in and started doing it. The experience so far has been positive, with a few likes and some follows, and I’m waiting with anticipation where it’ll take me. 🙂

I started my blog in 2008 in a place once called Vox. It closed and I moved here to WP. My life is not so interesting and I live alone but for my two pets.
There is no human sounding board here in my little piece of the world but if I open myself up to blogging to share my thoughts, experiences and random day to day it makes me feel like I am a part of something.
I get to see the world through beautiful photography & travel blogs. I am introduced to some of the finest artists, writers, thinkers and humorists. My introductions to people from around the world have been amazing and I have been so fortunate to have made a few nice friends. People I would have NEVER otherwise have met or gotten to know.
People that are as eclectic as I am in their interests and passions, it’s refreshing and comforting. To know that every now and then, someone will read MY post and maybe “Like” it, or better yet “Comment”!!! A comment on a post always brings a smile to me because someone took the time to read what I had to say and let me know they were there.
Just little ole’ me spending time in the early dawn, before the world wakes fully, catching glimpses of the world outside my world. Knowing that it is possible to dream, to share, to watch and to connect. I couldn’t live without the beautiful human contact that is blogging.

Blogging does take more time than I thought it would. Writing posts, for me is only a small part of the time I spend on the blogosphere. And thanks for the work you do for rescue animals!

I never imagined I would love blogging so much or become so involved in my own circle of blogging friends, commenting, clicking, reading, laughing, being inspired and inspiring. Lately I’ve felt so good to be apart of that community, your poem captures how I feel about it perfectly, thank you

Great poem! 🙂 I love how it’s structured.

For me, blogging keeps me sane. It keeps me stay down the right path on de-stressing from work and massaging my creative juices that have begun to stiffen and solidify after hours of neglect. I do it because there’s too much going on inside of me to keep it all to myself or bombard friends and family with.

I think I’m still figuring out things in the blogging world. I realize that this really is my blog to shape however I wish, not how most popular blogs are generally tailored. I will probably get to the same mix of topics, designs, etc. that they have already accumulated but it will definitely be my own. Besides, who else here has tried to combine Batman, food, & traveling? I’ve been told that I can’t but hey guess what, in my own little world, I MOST DEFINITELY CAN 😛

Thank you, Vyvacious! I, too have found that my blog helps me keep my creative juices flowing. I have always had to have a creative outlet and the blog certainly does that for me. And you know what, you can structure your blog any way you want! And you will find a readership of people with similar interests or a readership of people who find your perspective compelling. I love that about this community. Thanks for the follow and the comment here!

Sometimes I worry that I have too many interests that don’t really have an intersection point other than me…haha. I don’t have that perfect niche that I feel like some people have down pat.

You’re welcome again! Can’t wait to read more of your posts 🙂

Hello Cathy, I like this poem of yours. I found out we have the same reason for blogging. May I ask your permission to share this to my friends? I think people should know why bloggers keep their blogs and were so into writing.

      Hi Robin,
We travel in some of the same circles. I’ve seen your comments at Le Clown’s place and I think Madame Weeble’s too. Yes, this post was Freshly Pressed a couple of weeks ago and then made it into the October editor’s picks for WP. And is speaks for me of my feelings about blogging. I think it spoke to a lot of people in a similar way. Thanks for coming over and checking it out! I’ve been wanting to get over to your place and see what you’re doing. Should have some time this weekend. Don’t be surprised if you see a like or a few comments from me…in the meantime, Cheers!

Yup . . . I hang around Le Clown and Madame Weebles places. Poor Madame Weebles with the storm damage and power outage! Le Clown, well, he is a lovable crazy man. I adore them both.

Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed. That is a nice feather in your cap. Hope you do stop by my blog. It is rather dusty at the moment because my father took ill and I’ve been (along with my sisters) tending to his care while he was in the hospital and now nursing home. I’ll be back tho~!

        Robin,
It takes a lot of energy to care for an ailing parent. My best wishes for you and your sisters. I will check it out and know that it’s coming back soon.

    Thank you Cathy,
    Spot on!
I have been thinking a lot recently about the different ways I communicate with my friends. Each medium has its strengths and weaknesses. Tweeting and social media tend to be superficial and ephemeral. I enjoy blogging but it does require time and research and thoughtful writing to create something worthwhile – as you have done here so neatly, so eloquently. For the past year I have been spending a lot of time trying to master Italian. One consequence is that I do not have time to research and write my English language blog. That leaves me frustrated and I look forward to resuming my meanderings among the topics that catch my eye and my fancy, and sharing them with my blog-friends.
    Thanks for sharing your writings,
    Peter

      Peter,
Thank you for your thoughtful comment here. Yes, blogging does take more time than other social media, but I enjoy the depth and breadth of experiences more. I spend very little time on Facebook and almost none on Twitter. And I can understand your need to devote concentrated time and energy to Italian. I speak Spanish and have learned some Italian, but it is a far more complex language that many of the other Romance languages, in my humble opinion. I checked out your blog and it sounds like you do spend time in Rome and other places in Italy. Would love to read more about your trips! Thanks again for stopping by here.
