Mount Evans Goat by Cathy Ulrich
There are so many things for which I feel thankful. But I chose this photo because it portrays my love of the outdoors, my beautiful Colorado mountains and the amazing wildlife that I get to enjoy here. This shot was taken at the summit of Mount Evans west of Denver. These Mountain Goats live in the high alpine tundra and are often seen in the area. They were climbing around on the abandoned visitors center at the summit.

Yeah, he does have a bit of rough haircut! I guess they shed their whole fleece in the summer so what you see in the shot is the remnants of that. They look so soft and fuzzy, I’d love to pet one, but they’re wild and I guess that’s probably a bad idea.

Wow, great shot Cathy! Would the caption read, “Hurry up, take your picture. I’m not posing all day for you”? That’s what the urban wildlife I shoot in NYC usually say to me. I’ve yet to get a good shot of a rat. Pigeons and squirrels are more cooperative.

He does look like he’s posing. Yes, I would imagine it’s hard to get a good shot of a rat (maybe for good reason). But tree bags? Those will definitely pose for you.

I love the way he is looking out, with both eyes, not the prey-animal one eye, one side of the head to get a full view around. The head lowering in primate body-language is submission, but in a horned animal may mean something else.

Yep, lowering his head probably does mean something else, Clare. Although these goats seem fairly docile. I wouldn’t want to test it, though, they’re wild and pretty big!

What a beautiful shot! I love the way he’s losing his old hair – I wish my big dog would do that so I didn’t have to shave him 😀

Thank you, Dianne! Yes, wouldn’t that be great if dogs could “shave themselves” like this goat does? It is interesting how they lose the whole outer layer in the summer. They live in one of the harshest environments in the world – very cold in the winter so I guess it makes sense that they would shed the whole winter coat at one time. Thank you! They’re not aggressive, and they seemed fairly shy if anyone approached them, they would move away. But I did love the pose. 🙂
