Weekly Photo Challenge – Unique

Orange Frog Fish by Cathy Ulrich

Orange Frog Fish by Cathy Ulrich

Here’s my interpretation of “Unique” – an elusive and unusual creature that I encountered on my scuba trip to St. Kitts in the Caribbean last summer. This Frogfish was hanging out (literally upside down) on an orange sponge, camouflaged so well that we would have missed it had it not been for our guide’s keen eye. This shot was taken with an Olympus XZ-1 in the Olympus PT-50 housing. I used a Light & Motion Sola 1200 video light and the internal camera flash.

Thank you, Mary. Underwater photography has been a challenge with some great rewards. I’m getting better at it, but it certainly is a journey. But as they say, it’s not the destination, but the journey…

  8. That is fantastic! I am very excited about this on several levels. For one thing, I think I’m going to start using “Frogfish” as a term of endearment for my boyfriend. I doubt he’ll even notice, though, as that will be one of the more normal ones I’ve come up with. 😛

You made me laugh, Jennifer! You might want to look them up on Wikipedia. I guess Frogfish are part of a whole group of fish – also called anglerfish that are quite tricky. They are certainly masters of disguise. 🙂

  10. It took a while for my blind eye to see the fish. In fact, at first I thought I was looking at a bloody organ. Definitely unique Cathy.

Yes, it is unique – definitely, V. On that same dive trip we saw three of these guys – this orange one, a very yellow one and an amazing neon green one. But they could all be confused for bloody organs, you’re right. The thing that’s so interesting about them is that they really don’t move much. This guy (or girl) sat on that coral while 20 divers swam by, photographed him/her and then went on. Apparently, they stay in one place for long periods of time and eat whatever they can catch that swims by. Maybe that’s why the guide found him/her. He hadn’t moved in some time so the guide basically knew where to look. They’re so rare, that the divers, including myself, are pretty excited when we see/photograph them. This one was by far, the prettiest I have seen, if you can call him/her that. But maybe that is just because orange is one of my favorite colors (I’m and autumn…)
