Weekly Photo Challenge – In the Background

In the Background

In the Background

Here’s my interpretation of “In the Background” for this week’s challenge. It’s a portrait of Peter scuba diving off the island of St. Kitts in the Eastern Caribbean with his new best friend!

  2. I love how crisply in focus the fish is, and Peter is sort of blurry in the background. Makes the photo more dramatic. What kind of fish is he? I’ve seen them before but don’t know what they’re called.

  3. Gorgeous, of course, but that seems like kind of a toxic friendship to me! 🙂

Which one is Peter? Oh, the one with the scuba gear, of course. 🙂 This is a great shot! Amazing clarity on that fish. I really like the B&W processing, too. It really calls attention to the patterns.

It is perfect! Diving scares me. Wonderful interpretation Cathy although Lion Fish are deadly!

Thanks, Kathryn. Yes, they have a pretty nasty sting but fortunately, they’re not aggressive and they move slowly. A careful diver can get close without being stung – one just needs to pay attention. These guys are all over the Caribbean, now, an invasive species. But they are sooo beautiful. Usually they’re hiding in nooks and crannies in the reefs, so when I find one free swimming like this, it’s a great opportunity to get below the fish and shoot up.

Yes, I do UW photography. Thanks! If you want to see more of my UW shots, just click on Underwater Photography in the tag cloud on my site when you get a chance. We go diving about once a year and I have a great bridge camera that I take – an Olympus XZ-1. I love it!

  23. Ooh ooh! Love this one Cathy! Big fan of black and white, and like that you went with it for what would generally be a color op. The background is haunting, as you focus on the fish. Fabulous!
