The Sign Says…
Please place carts here! I don’t typically shop at big box stores, but I must admit, I do like Target. And I love their logo and the red balls along the sidewalk in front of the store. In my opinion, they do a good job with their graphics, hence my choice today. I also like how they did the graphic on the sign to actually match the shape of their carts. This shot was taken with the camera in my iPhone 4s using the HDR option.

I am obsessed with Target. It is the big box that I don’t feel despicable shopping at, and I think a lot of that has to do with its aesthetic. Even the labeling on its store brand items is clean and appealing. (Dear Target, please send me my check now.)

Have you taken notice of the location and size of the red balls?

Interesting question, Peter. I haven’t measured them exactly, but I think they’re about 24-30 inches in diameter and placed about 15 feet apart. They seem to define the sidewalk at the front of the store. The “energy” of them seems, to me, to define the entrance to the store and what catches my eye is the fact that they’re big, three dimensional red balls…ones that I probably wouldn’t try to roll…

A target just opened in the next town to where I live… Maybe I will give it a try. (since thier sign for shopping carts is an upside down frog and I love frogs)

I like Target’s aesthetic, too, but there’s only one in Manhattan and it’s nowhere near my neighborhood. It would not repulse me to shop there, even though I am not much of a big box store shopper. Wow, what a dull comment.

No, not dull, V. I feel a little confused about shopping at Target. too. I think, given the choice, I would rather shop at the big box store that speaks to my sense of aesthetics. At least they have thought about color and shape and space…Maybe I’m a slave to design? I don’t know, but somehow it pleases me that they engaged a designer to create a graphic of their shopping cart to show people where to park them when they’re done… The devil’s in the details?

I’m in complete agreement with you. Even though my personal style is a cross between Larry David and perpetual college student, a store’s aesthetic and design are both very important to me.

Your comment made me laugh, V. I can’t decide whether I love Larry David or hate him! On one hand, I think he’s hysterically funny and on the other, he’s a huge asshole, but maybe that’s what I like about him. And maybe that’s also what attracts me about Target…big box store with an aesthetic heart? Who spends thousands of dollars creating a logo shaped exactly like their shopping cart? I simply cannot ignore that. Again, maybe the Designer in me?

My friend, Martini Max, claims that we love Larry because he’ll always be a bigger asshole than us. He throws himself on the asshole grenade so we can all think better about ourselves. I just happen to dress like him much of the time … And maybe now and then act like an industrial strength asshole myself. I definitely prefer any kind of store with an aesthetic heart, but most of the ones I like most — Williams Sonoma, Anthropologie, Whole Paycheck are beyond my modest means. If Tar-zhay were near me, at least I could afford to shop there.

You always enter Target with the intention of one or two things and then….well, you know. Love the pic, Cathy and I do love those big bright red balls. Here, there are not enough of those cart returns and usually carts end up all willy-nilly all over the lot anyway. And people leave all kinds of trash inside the carts. I ask myself, Why, why!? Why don’t you just return your carts to the cart thing?? Anyway, love the pic. Don’t ever wear red and khaki while shopping there — consumers will always mistake you for one of the Target family. :).

Those big parking lots always bring me back to my childhood living in Australia. I used to love them back then, the big malls, so dazzling and exciting. The video games stores were my favorite 🙂

Thank you, Rohan. This chain has some very fun aesthetics and graphic art that appeals to me. They’re nicely merchandised and have an open, inviting feel, not to mention their attention to detail. I don’t shop there often, but I find it to be a pleasant experience when I do!

Pretty clear sign, isn’t it? And as someone above mentioned, you framed it all so well – with Target’s help I guess. I find cheaper protein bars there, and sometimes different cosmetics, and I found a fun pair of big bright blue reading glasses, too.

I had read the challenge earlier in the day and when I saw that sign, the corral and the one cart in it, I seized the chance! And to be honest, it wasn’t perfectly framed when I shot it – I did engage the help of the crop tool in Lightroom…
