A quick post and share from our weekend hike. Blake and Kim, our son and daughter-in-law were visiting this weekend. We shared a wonderful hike to American Lakes above Cameron Pass west of Fort Collins. As we were heading back down the mountain we looked to the right and here’s what we saw!
WOW!! That’s quite an impressive looking fella!

Yes, Mimi. He’s quite impressive. HUGE, in fact! The shot was okay. Not perfectly in focus, because I was pretty far away, but not interested in getting closer… 🙂

Cathy, I remember seeing moose when I went to Estes Park. Oh, they were always a grand sight! So much fun to see. Thanks for sharing your photo!

Thank you, Amy. they are such a wonderful surprise to see. This was taken just east of Cameron Pass up the Poudre Canyon. There were actually two large males grazing together. I just couldn’t get a good shot of the two of them (and didn’t want to get too close), so settled for this one.

Definitely not a little fella! Cheers to your weekend … Does your son get to visit often?

Thanks, Frank. No they haven’t been in a couple of years. But we see them at least once a year here or in Florida where they live. We had a really nice visit with them.

Quite the distance, thus the cherished visit!

Amazing! I would love to see one. I have read they are very dangerous especially in rut! Great capture!

Thanks so much, Kathryn. There were two large males grazing and we kept our distance, but they really didn’t seem to pay us much attention. I’ve seen that behavior before in the Tetons in Wyoming. They were more interested in eating than in us.

Thanks, Audra. It’s a little out of focus because of the distance, even with a telephoto lens, but I was not interested in getting closer!

I wouldn’t either !! The other night I was walking down my street and came upon a BEAR! It was about twelve feet from me fishing in the stream. I was stuck between running for the hills and wishing I had my camera. Beautiful creature.

Wow, Audra! I would be faced with the same dilemma!. But how cool was that!!?? Although twelve feet is a little too close for comfort.

I know. There were some little boys playing near by too. Thankfully he ran away into the woods. I’ve seen it lumbering in the dark in our yard and I had been eager to see it up close. This was too close 🙂

He looks HUGE! I used to go to Maine every year because my mother swore there were moose all over the place. We’d drive around on back roads looking for them, and I never got to see one. Guess I should have been driving around Fort Collins instead!
Really nice shot, Cathy. Thank you.

Thanks, Mary! He was huge. The moose population is apparently doing quite well here in Colorado. We see them quite often, especially in the high pass west of Fort Collins (Cameron pass area). It was a beautiful day, although hot in town. Temperatures were much cooler at 12,000 feet.

So jealous! El Boyfriendo and I have been trying to see a moose for many years, including this weekend. No dice. Guess he was visiting you instead. 🙂

He and his brother were visiting. There were two of them, but I couldn’t get a good shot of the two together. Not cooperating. But it was so fun to see them! Sorry they’ve been elusive in Maine. They’re supposed to be all over the place there!

And it was not even a bronze one!

Long live Bullwinkle, Cathy! Any chance a squirrel in a blue aviator’s helmet was flying around near by?

No, V. Unfortunately Rocket J. was nowhere to be seen! I did look, though.

Wow! What a surprise and definitely Colorado! Two thumbs up is right!!!
The American lakes is actually a place that I back packed into and camped with Alli and friends when she was just a little girl. She had it made.. she was small enough to sit on a couple of adults shoulders for the hike!

I had never been up to American Lakes before, Aileen. It’s beautiful! And there there were several groups camping up there. The moose were definitely a bonus.

backpacked for days many yeas again, and had moose “stalking” us… love them, and this is an impressive, one… but, boy do I prefer to see them from as distance! Then, moose are a big favorite of mine. 🙂

Yes, Dawn. I love them too. I’ve haven’t done much backpacking, but we have so many beautiful places close by, we do a lot of day hikes. This one was about 7 1/2 miles total..a good day’s workout and then a nice shower and comfy bed. But I can certainly understand the appeal of staying up there for a few days.

I know, Lynn! How lucky can you get?!!! And there were two of them! They were busy eating with heads down mostly, and I couldn’t get a clear shot of both of them looking up so settled on this one. But they were absolutely gorgeous. Do you ever see them in the northwest?
