From our recent trip to Bonaire – here’s a shot of a Fireworm curled around a piece of coral. My object is the white coral branch as the pedestal for this colorful Fireworm. By the way, the Fireworm gets it name from not only its colorful red spots, but also because it has a vicious sting. Fortunately, if one simply avoids touching them, one can avoid their sting as they can’t swim!

That coral looks like a couple hands suffering the aftermath of frostbite. Can you tell it’s cold where I live? 😉
Great photo, Cathy!

Thanks, Carrie. It’s cold here, too! We got 5 inches of snow last night. But it was definitely warm there – and it’s been over a month since we were there, now. Oh well!

They can’t swim? Man, are they in the wrong place! I love how the coral looks like a big white hand holding the colorful worm.

Thank you, Mary. I first spotted this Fireworm from above and took a shot of it from that perspective, but when I swam around to its side, this view appeared more interesting.

And you do it SO well!! The underwater images, as you know, are my favorite! I just love the creatures of this beautiful underwater world.

Another terrific shot, Cathy! National Geographic should hire you. If the Fireworm cannot swim how does it get around? I don’t expect that there are commuter trains for Fireworms.

Thanks, V. Fireworms crawl around the reef. They’ll also drop from one place to another. So if they reach what would be a cliff for them, they just let go and drop down to the next level. We saw several do this during our dives in Bonaire. And since they’re light and feathery, they just kind of float down.

So no broken Fireworm bones or concussions, eh? Nice.

Beautiful! Ocean life amazes me. I hope you saw mostly healthy coral around there.

Thanks, Sheila. Yes, even though this piece was dead, there was a lot of healthy coral on this site and throughout Bonaire, in general. There’s one region on the north side of Klein Bonaire that has suffered a lot of damage from storms, but the rest of it is pretty healthy.

Thank you, Janet. We’re staying warm inside, but getting lots of snow. Yaay! Breckenridge got about 3 feet in the last 48 hours!

Thank you for this opportunity to get up close and personal (but not TOO) with a Fireworm, something I’m not likely to encounter in real life anytime soon! I love the way the subtle shades of the coral seem to reflect the colors of the creature.

Thank you on both counts, Frank! It was really disappointing. Not really even sure what happened with our Broncos. We left the party to go home and watch it in silence and they scored during the five minutes that we were gone! Maybe we should have driven around for a while? You know “its only weird if it doesn’t work” – from the Bud Light commercials.

Well, much of the problems were due to the Seahawks. But like you said, it was like they didn’t show up.
