This nest is in a cottonwood tree near the bike path and I was running by there about a month ago when I noticed people looking up. I decided to take my Nikon with 300mm lens this past Sunday, hoping she would still be there. She was! I also took my tripod. She was good enough to pose for me!
Too funny, Jennifer. We actually had a few people come by to see what I was photographing and even when I pointed out exactly where she was, they couldn’t see her!
I agree, V. She looked really snuggled down. She was sleeping when I set up my camera and I have several shots of her with her eyes closed. Several people came by as I was photographing and she finally had had enough and popped down in the hole, so it must be fairly deep.
Thanks so much, Russ. Yes, this is an old and gnarly tree with lots of character. It was fascinating to me too that the owl was so well camouflaged in that environment.

I agree, Lee. She was sleeping when I arrived at the scene with camera and tripod. Then all these people stopped to see what I was photographing. She was not amused…
WOW!! What a terrific photo!!

Thanks, Carrie. Yes, she is really well camouflaged! Good thing, too, because her nest (while about 60 feet off the ground) is right by the bike path!

That is an amazing shot, Cathy. That owl looks so snuggly in its hole, it makes me wish I could live in a tree.

I love the picture. Miss Owl looks very content to be wedged in the hole.

Thanks, Mary. She was definitely very comfortable. It was just us noisy humans who were disturbing her nap! 🙂

I love owls, too, Brigitte. It’s just so unusual to get to see them as they’re quite reclusive.

Great shot, Cathy! I love the expression, textures, rings inside the hole, and the way the tree evokes a wavy motion to me.

Good eye on catching this one. How close did you get?

Thanks, Frank. This hole was about 50-60 feet above the ground. I was using a fairly high powered telephoto lens and a tripod to capture this image.

Thanks … but the owl doesn’t seem alarmed.

Her expression made me laugh. She really does look like someone just woke her up, and she’s not happy about it.
