There have been a few spotted in town and once one in our neighborhood, but personally I’ve never seen one that close to home. This one was half of a pair grazing near the summit of Cameron Pass about 1 1/2 hours west of Fort Collins. Apparently they have made quite a come-back in Colorado, but they’re pretty reclusive so it’s always a thrill to see them.
I hope you’re feeling better today, V. Saw your comment yesterday on Susie’s site that you were down with a cold.
I think a moose sighting would be very cool Cathy. I once when on a hike and saw some deer and really liked that.
Yeah, I’m recovering from a monster cold right now. Today, I’m back at The Grind coughing, sneezing and sweating my guts out. I’m drinking so much green tea my pee looks radioactive. Good times.
I’d be trekking through snow at the altitude where I spotted this guy last summer were I to go hiking there right now, but I do think I’ll go for a run or a bike ride tomorrow in our lower heights. Now, dear V., not to lecture you, but you do have a cold, go to sleep!
He was a big fella, Frank. Fortunately, I had my Nikon with 300mm telephoto lens handy, so I wasn’t actually that close to him. Not that he couldn’t have closed the distance pretty quick had he wanted to…
Nice! When I lived in Boulder I used to go visit my mother who was living in northern Maine at the time. She always promised me a moose sighting. I never saw one. I didn’t know I only had to go to Fort Collins to see one!
Thanks, Mimi! It took awhile to get this one as he was standing with his head down and grazing most of the time while I stood patiently (or maybe not so much) until he decided to raise his head.
I’ve been spending time in Maine for decades trying to see a Moose, with no luck. I would never have thought to go to Colorado! Then again if I did, they’d moooove.
They are elusive, Elyse! But more and more common in Colorado. We have seen two while riding the Gondola down to town from the ski mountain in Breckenridge this winter – twice! We also had a (too close) up close and personal encounter with a bull moose a few years ago on a hike in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. And let me tell you, they are BIG!
Glad he’s out in nature, Cathy, and not sitting in front of me at a movie theater. Do moose roam freely in Fort Collins?

And the weather was perfect when I left The Grind tonight. But I went straight home.

I hope you’re enjoying it! Enjoy it for both of us — and even the occasional moose you come across on your hikes.
