Weekly Photo Challenge – Split-Second Story

The Story of the Rocks

The Story of the Rocks

This week’s challenge can be intepreted many ways, but I was intrigued by one of the lines in the prompt: “Put your National Geographic hat on and tell a story by documenting a moment in time through a single image.” Here’s my offering.

Last fall, my sister visited and she, Peter and I spent a full week in Moab, Utah. On Labor Day, we did a guided hike through the Fiery Furnace in Arches National Park – a fascinating area of rock spires and pinnacles that is so elaborate, the park service doesn’t allow people into its depths without a guide. We spent the morning with park ranger Allison who showed us how to jump over rock crevices and climb through narrow cracks and along the way, she stopped to tell stories of the geological history and the wildlife that thrives in this desert environment. This shot was taken during one of those stops and Allison shared a story of this beautiful place.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Twist

Steinway in the Canyon

Steinway in the Canyon

So here’s an interesting twist: a six-foot Steinway in the middle of Canyonlands National Park. This shot was taken before a fabulous classical music concert last September. Part of the Moab Music Festival, the Grotto Concerts are a once in a lifetime experience – and I’ve been twice! This amazing natural amphitheater off the Colorado River hosts three of these concerts during the music festival.

Imagine being transported by jet boat up the Colorado River, arriving at the edge of a mysterious rock wall, walking along a dirt path lined with dense vegetation and emerging to this! And if you’re curious, the top edge of this grotto was my subject for last week’s Weekly Photo Challenge. To see that photo, just click here.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Work of Art

Amphitheater to the Sky

Amphitheater to the Sky

I’ve been moving into the realm of Fine Art Photography and am currently taking an online course on Black and White work. In many photography circles, black and white shows up a lot in fine art exhibitions as it captures textures, form and light in ways that color may obscure. So I’m sharing a shot I included in my first project for the Black and White course. I call it “Amphitheater to the Sky.” I’d like to think the shot is a work of art as well as the subject – nature in it’s glory – a rock amphitheatre carved by water and wind.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Spring

Daffodil

Daffodil

To me, nothing says Spring better than the wonderful color and feel of emerging spring bulbs. Daffodils display the color of the sun – and its return to the south after a long winter.
