Amphitheater to the Sky
I’ve been moving into the realm of Fine Art Photography and am currently taking an online course on Black and White work. In many photography circles, black and white shows up a lot in fine art exhibitions as it captures textures, form and light in ways that color may obscure. So I’m sharing a shot I included in my first project for the Black and White course. I call it “Amphitheater to the Sky.” I’d like to think the shot is a work of art as well as the subject – nature in it’s glory – a rock amphitheatre carved by water and wind.

Thank you! I’m excited to explore this work. We have a trip planned over the summer to go to Badlands National Park in South Dakota and I think I’m going to really enjoy shooting that rugged landscape in Black and White. Should be a lot of fun!

Thank you! At first, I thought I liked it better in color since it’s red rocks against a blue sky (that complimentary color thing going on), but I’ve decided I like the B & W better as it does capture textures and light in a way that the color does not. It’s interesting learning about what works well in the two formats.

Amohitheater to the Skay is a great interpretation of this interesting shot; though my first sensation was a new life coming into being, a birth from inside! Delicated and very well done W&B Cathy, lovely!

Sorry it’s taken me a while to get over here Cathy; I’m very behind in my overall blog-reading. I think it’s a great nature shot and I echo all who say that it brings to mind Ansel Adams. That’s the second thing I thought after I saw it. The first was that it’s a terrific composition that’s so rich in detail. I look forward to seeing whatever you decide to post when you and Peter visit Badlands National Park this summer. I anticipate some very fine images. You have such an excellent eye.
