Baby Screech Owls
I’ve been wanting to share this shot since I took it over a week ago. Some of you may remember the shot I shared of the adult Screech Owl in her nest. To refresh your memory, click here.
Ten days ago, I invited Peter to go with me to see her in the nest. She had been there just about every day that I passed her tree on my run. When we got there, the nest was empty and just about the time we were getting ready to leave the site, we noticed a couple about 30 yards away looking up in the trees. He had a gigantic telephoto lens on a tripod and was pointing it up into the tree. This shot is what we all saw! Enjoy.

I can understand. It was such an amazing experience to see them. There were actually four babies and two adults hanging out in those trees that afternoon. One of the adults came over and perched very near these two but I couldn’t get a clear shot of it.

Thank you, Dawn. No this is my shot. I took along my Sony bridge camera which actually has a longer focal length zoom lens than the 300 mm telephoto I have for my Nikon. It’s smaller and lighter and we walked over to the site – about 2 1/2 miles. I was so glad I got to use it!

Oh my goodness. I needed an Awwww today and this did it, Cathy. So precious. I love owls and these little babies are darling. I love elephants too. Owls and elephants. 😀

I’m with you, Brigitte. I, too, love owls and elephants. I don’t completely understand it, but I get choked up every time I’m around elephants. There’s something about them that deeply touches my soul. Who knows, maybe I was a Mahout in India in a past life!

You’re right, but it’s a good kind of cuteness. What a wonderful sighting! I’m also curious about what model Sony camera you have. I’d like a longer telephoto but would prefer to have it in a compact, versatile format rather than lugging around a large lens for my Nikon dSLR.

The Sony is a DSC-HX1. I’ve had it probably 4 years. It takes fairly good shots, although it doesn’t do RAW files, so you’re stuck with JPEGs from the start, and its sensor is fairly small, so not much availability to do large prints. I do like the fact that it has an electronic viewfinder (one of the early ones, I think).
I also understand about carrying around the Nikon dSLR. I just sprung for the Olympus OMD-EM1 and I’m LOVING it! Great functionality and and stunning electronic viewfinder. I love my D600, but I have to get the sensor cleaned at least twice a year – they’re just dust magnets, whereas the mirrorless OMD is so well sealed and it’s really much lighter and more compact for maybe even better functionality.

Owl babies! They look so very soft. Their eyes are SO round, aren’t they? I love owls, but I so seldom see them around here. Coincidently, I just did a blog post with photos of baby robins that are nested in our rhododendron. They are so tiny. Much smaller than your owl babies. 😉
Isn’t this a splendid time of year with all this new life surround us?!

I saw your robins, Mary. So tiny and naked! It’s amazing how quickly they grow! I think these owl babies were several weeks old and I also think the owls spend more time with their parents because they have lots more growing to do before they can be independent. Maybe you could share a few more shots of your robin brood as the grow?
