Extra Aquatic Life

Extra Aquatic Life

I shot this arrowcrab hiding in a tube sponge this past Winter while diving in Bonaire. As often happens in underwater shots, when I looked at the shot in post processing, this little back and yellow fish showed up as a companion. I didn’t see when I took the shot!

You find the most unusual creatures inside tube sponges! 😉 Actually, I was so busy looking at the arrowcrab, I didn’t see the little fish until I read your description. Perfect for the theme.

Thanks, Mary. When I saw the prompt for this week, I immediately thought of this shot! I see it all the time with the UW shots. Some little fish swims into view about the time I take the shot. 🙂

Thank you, Amy. UW photography is really challenging, but it’s fun when the shots come out well. Well it’s fun anyway, but especially when the shots come out. 🙂

  4. If that little bumblebee colored fish only knew about your shout out, it would be bragging its fins off to all its fish friends, Cathy.

Wow, that crab is ALL legs! I love the little photo-bomber fish. That often happens to me with insects or spiders showing up in my flower shots. It’s a fun little surprise…though not always appreciated!

These arrowcrabs are very small – about 2/12 inches across and, you’re right, very leggy. I love their bright blue claws! It’s like they’re wearing blue gloves. I agree, the photo-bombers can be fun, but not always. Thanks, Lee!

Thanks, Kathryn. Tube sponges come in many different colors and love these fuchsia ones! But I’ve seen red, blue, orange, yellow. I’m doing very well. Busy as usual, but enjoying summer. It’s much cooler here than in many recent Junes. Mid-seventies and sunny!

  14. Oh. My! Well you know how much I adore your underwater shots… Love them! Can’t wait to finally try diving, and then learn to shoot underwater things like this. I have no expectation of being as good, but I’d love to just get down there and try it! Beautiful, Cathy.

Thanks, Dawn. I know you would love it! UW photography takes some getting used to and there are many more things to consider such as lighting and the distance between the camera and the subject (the more distance, the more the colors just become blue), but I’m sure you could do it. It’s really rewarding when all that comes together into a nice shot.
