Weekly Photo Challenge – Relic

Virginia Dale Stage Station

Virginia Dale Stage Station

Celebrating it’s 152nd year, the Virginia Dale Stage Station served as a stop along the Overland Trail which went from Atchison, Kansas to Salt Lake City, Utah. Located about 45 miles northwest of Fort Collins, Colorado the station is included in the National Register of Historic Places. I found out about it when I was invited to show my photography at an art show and sale inside the station on July 25-27th.

A percentage of the sales from the show will be used for restoration and preservation of the station. I’m joining ten other artists for the weekend, and our works will be shown in a gallery-like setting in the station. The Virginia Dale Community Club will also be hosting a wine-tasting and a Chili contest that weekend.

  1. That’s wonderful, Cathy! I wish I could attend, but unfortunately, there’s not a subway that stops near that particular station. Great rustic building. Your color is always so beautiful.

Nope, no subways any near this station! In fact, it’s on a winding dirt road about a mile east of the main highway between Fort Collins and Laramie, WY – literally out in the middle of nowhere. Thanks for the kind compliment, V. I’ll post some photos of the event in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to it!

Congratulations, Cathy. I enjoy seeing such old and historic buildings. It’s interesting how the side wall extends well above the roof line. I’ll bet it was because it was easier to build the wall by keeping it square.

Thank you, Russ. I think you’re probably right. That kind of architecture (if you can all it that 🙂 ) is fairly common in the old west buildings and I never actually thought of why that might be. I probably was a way of building the wall square. These straight walls were most often placed in the front of the building…

Wonderful Cathy. Superb photo and interesting bit of info on the station. All the best for your show and hope you raise substantial amount to help in its restoration.

Do visit my piece of ‘relic’ as well. 🙂 Thanks.

  8. What a fantastic building to hold an art show in. And what a great way to fundraise. Love the way the wood has weathered. If it were her in WA, it would be covered in moss and blackberry canes.

So often I catch your photos in the morning on my iPhone. Usually I mean to come back later and comment, but then the day gets away from me. The thing I like so much about your “relic” (besides the obvious beauty and your way with color) is that it calls forth such mystery and nostalgia for a bygone era. Love it!

Thank you, Mary. This building sits in a pretty valley about a mile off the main road. It really does carry a sense of mystery, especially because of its remote location. I wonder about all those stagecoach passengers and drivers that spent the night there on their way to and from Salt Lake City…

As for this particular photo: I love the off-centered orientation and the beautiful grains in the wood. What a gem!
