Weekly Photo Challenge – Adventure

Spotted Moray Eel

Spotted Moray Eel

If you’ve followed this blog for a while, you probably know about my scuba diving and underwater photography habit. You might also suspect that I’d pick an underwater shot for my interpretation of “Adventure.” Well, while I don’t alway behave in a predictable manner, this time I’m going with the obvious. Here’s a shot I took last December of a spotted moray eel in Bonaire. To me, it’s quite the adventure to be able to get up close and personal with these magnificent animals.

  3. Cathy, great shot! That fish’s stylish spots bring to mind the leopard-print dress Serena Williams has been wearing at this year’s US Open.

I’d say that definitely qualifies. He looks like he’s not sure he’s happy to see you!

Thanks, Leon. Eels are quite shy and I don’t think he was all that thrilled to see me either, but approaching slowly and also sending out a little “energy” communication that I meant no harm helped and he let me get pretty close. 🙂

  9. Cool capture! I’ve gotten to see a moray eel, but it was solid colored and green. Their teeth freak me out a bit, but they are fascinating to see.

Thanks, Susan. Yes, the green morays are quite beautiful and I’ve seen several in my trips to the Caribbean, but these spotted ones are perhaps more common, at least where I’ve been. Their teeth are pretty intimidating – certainly a reason not to stick one’s hand in a hole in the reef without knowing what’s in there!

Thanks, Frank! Yep! Not only do they have teeth lining the edges of their mouths, but also a row running up the roof of their mouths. Fortunately, they don’t bite unless provoked or cornered. They’re pretty docile, really. I approach slowly and there’s a camera between me and them which does help…
