Thanks, Amy! I was pretty pleased with this one. After a day or so of diving, it was the first one I really felt I had nailed with my new rig. After breaking the ice with this shot, things got a lot better… 🙂

Yes it is! I’ve done UW photography for several years but a new camera and strobe seems to take at least a few dives to get the gear dialed in.

Yet another great Undersea World of Cathy shot as well as a fish education lesson. Until I read this post, I would have assumed that tarpon was typo for tampon. I would have just called that fish “the one with a fierce underbite”.

Thanks, V. Yes, tarpon do have a fierce underbite and they’re known for their ferocity in other aspects, too. They’re fierce hunters of smaller fish and are pretty high up on the food chain. And while I don’t do any fishing, I’m told they’re fierce sport fish – fighting mightily when caught – usually catch and release is also my understanding because they’re not very tasty. But they are certainly shiny!

Great composition! Wonderful reflection of light off the fish. I love the diver in back and the rising bubbles. And are those clouds I’m seeing through the surface?
LikeLike
Thanks, Leon! I didn’t even realize the diver was back there when I took the photo. Don’t you love serendipity? While the light on the surface does look like clouds, what you’re actually seeing is the refraction 😉 of the light on the surface. That particular look is especially noticeable in late afternoon which is when this shot was taken.

Thanks so much, Amy! I have seen Tarpon around wrecks and feeding at night, but I had never seen them hanging around the boat in late evening. We saw them pretty much every day. They’re so sleek and shiny.

What a magnificent underwater shot! Must have been difficult to take such perfect photos. Light on the part of fish, more light dawning upon the water from the top and a diver in the background, makes it a wonderful story, all around. I have never tried UV photo but your shot inspires me to take it up 🙂
Do visit my post as well. Thanks 🙂

Thanks so much, Suyash. Yes, UW photography takes some getting used to. I’ve been shooting UW for several years, and it just gets better, but it was pretty daunting at first – kind of like starting over with everything I knew about photography. I am glad I stuck with it, though, because it’s really, really fun! Glad you stopped by and thanks for the Twitter follow, too!

Such an elegant fish. The size of their scales always amazes me. A guy I worked with many years ago had a tarpon scale in his wallet. It was the size of a credit card. Beautiful photo.

Thanks, Susan. I think “elegant” is the perfect word to describe Tarpon. They really beautiful to see underwater and, yes, those scales are truly amazing.

Thanks, Tina! I love the diver too. The truth is, I was so focused (pun intended) on the fish, I didn’t notice them until I looked at the shot in post processing. 🙂
