Minimalist Shark
Here’s one of my favorite shark photos ever and to me, it feels very minimalist. Taken on our recent dive trip to Belize, this gray reef shark circled our group of divers – it seemed curious about our presence and stuck around for some time. And no, this shot was not taken with a telephoto lens!

Thanks, Carrie! I think because of our size, we’re not really on the food chain as far as they’re concerned. And they also typically don’t bother divers. Swimmers on the surface look like seals to sharks, but divers – not so much!

The color also makes it seems ominous. On the funny side, have you seen “Sharknado?” Lots of fun.

I haven’t seen Sharknado but there was a diver on the boat who wore a T-shirt advertising it!

Thanks, Amy. We saw sharks on most of our dives in Belize. Their presence signifies a healthy ecosystem – which is a good thing!

Thanks, V. Sharks are really misunderstood creatures – although I wouldn’t be calmly taking a photo of a Great White from six feet away. We saw these reef sharks on just about every dive in Belize. They seemed to be curious about us, but only got close enough to check us out. They’re really beautiful to see as they cruise along.

Stunning! The detail is that much more incredible in black and white… the eyes are so distinct and the small, thread-like thing coming from the shark’s mouth… such rich detail and nuance. I love this… at the risk of sounding repetitive. 😉

Thanks so much, Dawn! This shot was one of those instances where the B & W really did bring out the detail and shading much more than the color. It’s always a learning process! So glad you liked it.

Love the shot, Cathy but they terrify me. It’s what keeps me from going into large bodies of water, especially ones where I can’t see what’s below me. I know the stats about shark attacks. Still. You are a brave soul and what a GREAT shot. The fact that’s it’s black and white makes it even more chilling.

Thanks, Brigitte. I have to admit that I’m not completely comfortable with them circling around. When we see them gliding past on the wall, I do keep my eyes on them. At least I could bonk them in the nose with my large camera rig if need-be and I’m told that that’s sufficient to ward them off. But it’s usually the swimmers on the surface who are in much more danger because they look like prey to sharks. Underwater, divers are rarely threatened.
