Shafer Trail, Moab, Utah

Shafer Trail, Moab, Utah

One of my favorite off-road four-wheel-drive trails, Shafer Trail in Canyonlands National Park is relatively easy to negotiate in a Wrangler. We have travelled the 18.2 miles several times in our Jeep, but a few years ago we traded it for a Subaru Tribeca. So on a recent trip to Moab, we decided to give it a go in the Tribeca. Both of us had forgotten how challenging Shafer Trail can be. There are many stair-step like rock formations on the road which required me to get out and spot Peter as he drove the car over them, but we did make it all the way without tearing up the car. We both felt that this was quite an achievement and also decided that we would rent a Jeep the next time we wanted to go!

Very pretty. But I probably shouldn’t take my Honda Accord there…

Thanks, V. I know – it is too bad. Regardless of your general dislike for all things “outdoorsy,” you might like this area. Expansive and beautiful. And there’s even a film history museum near Moab with memorabilia and displays of all the westerns that have been filmed in the area (air conditioned, too!).

Stunning scenery and a gorgeous shot! I love the way the trail leads me all the way through it. I always marvel at the thought of the first travelers in the area…those pioneers who crossed from east to west in their covered wagons or even on foot.

Thanks so much, Leon! I know! Can you imagine what the first settler’s thought? We went to Badlands National Park in South Dakota this past summer and apparently the area got its name from the fact that the first French trappers couldn’t figure out how to get over these daunting land structures!
