Web Burrfish
I love the many expressions of nature – it constantly amazes and delights me. And often, when I think of the shapes and colors in nature, I think round, organic, soft, flowing. What a fun and surprising experience to see angular shapes on a fish!
While diving in Belize in September of this year, as I was finishing the last dive of the day at a depth of about 30 feet, I looked down and saw a curious creature staring up at me with big round yellow eyes! This Web Burrfish stayed in the same spot and let me dance with it, taking several photos of it’s many spots, and angular hexagons and pentagons.

He was very cute and I get the impression that they don’t move very fast! He actually kept turning away from me so I have several shots of him from the tail-end, but with he’d watch me with those eyes on the top of his head. It did feel like we were dancing!

I knew an art teacher who believed the best designs are in nature … and your photo of this fish supports her claim.

That is a quite a National Geographic shot of such a cooperative subject, Cathy. Possibly, this rock star fish is used to the cameras and like Mick Jagger is always ready for its close-up?

Thanks, V. He was actually quite shy. While he didn’t swim away from me, he kept turning his tail towards me and watching me with those eyes on the top of his head. He had this unique ability to turn his eyes independently. I had so much fun photographing him!

I’m wondering if that fish with the independently moving eyes is the reincarnation of Marty Feldman? If you ever see him again let him know that I thought he was brilliant in “Young Frankenstein”.

He did look kind-of like Marty Feldman, V. I wish I had thought to take a video of those eyes. And I, too, thought Marty was wonderful in that movie. You know: “Walk this way.”

I agree with you, Brigitte. What a glorious world we live in! I feel so blessed to be able to visit these remarkable places and share a bit of time with special creatures like this Burrfish. I had never seen one before – I couldn’t help but smile (really, I was grinning :-)), even though no one would know with the regulator in my mouth)!
