The ancient Mayan civilization spanned hundreds of miles throughout the Yucatan, Central America and into the mainland of Mexico. Here is a shot of the ruins of Altun Ha in Belize. We visited this site on our last day in the country after 10 glorious days of diving.

Great shot, Cathy. I always love your clarity and color saturation. Although I personally prefer ten days of ruins watching to any diving, I recall that you got some extraordinary undersea shots, too. So, I’ll stuff a sock in my complaining.

Glad to bring you those underwater shots, V. What I didn’t mention in the post, however, was that the place was swarming with mosquitoes as most jungle areas do – not something encountered underwater. But it was a fun excursion, anyway.

Outstanding fit for the theme .. .and (of course) a fine capture. To me, the white part of the stone provides the key contrast.

Thanks, Carrie. I enjoyed it very much. Being on the boat and diving those many days was pure heaven. I will warn you, however, that this archaeological site is in the middle of the jungle and host to many, many mosquitoes! Because of the wind and distance from land, we didn’t encounter those pesky critters while on the boat, but it was a rude awakening when we got out of the van to visit the ruins!

Oh, I bet. Having grown up in North Dakota and having been a frequent visitor to Minnesota, I know all about mosquitoes. But something tells me they’re a little larger in the jungles of Belize…

I love ruins, although I’ve not seen any Mayan or Incan or Aztec ones. 😦 Maybe someday and if not, I can enjoy them through your photos.

Oh, thanks, Dawn! It had been cloudy on the drive up and it was still overcast, but the clouds parted to the east so I could include some blue sky. I was much obliged! 🙂
