Lionfish Expressing
As many of you know, one of my passions is underwater photography. So what better way to express myself than to share a shot from my most recent dive trip to Curacao? Isn’t it hilarious???? I am still chuckling about it. I can just imagine, being there, in that beautiful warm water, seeing wonderful wildlife all around and then being covered in poop. Whale of a tale if you ask me!

Thanks, V. Yes, this fish does have a grumpy face for sure. He also has grumpy fins on his back that are highly poisonous! Fortunately he moves pretty slowly, otherwise I wouldn’t have dared to get this close. But I’m thinking I’d love to have a T-shirt with this stripe pattern on it! What do you think?

Thanks, Kathryn. I know! Wouldn’t that be an awesome T-shirt? Or maybe a cool dress! I’m thinking a sleeveless sheath number with those burnt sienna and white stripes. Isn’t it a lovely pattern?

There you go! I’ve never done fabric painting. That would be very cool. I’ve got other great shots of these guys if you ever want to see them. Just to get a better idea of the pattern, I mean. 🙂

When I was married we had a HUGE salt water reef tank. He made his own water etc. It was a huge amount of work but he did a great job for about 8 years. We had a lion fish for awhile during our experimental phase of who eats who 🙂

Well the Spider crabs ate everything except the Tangs and the Clown Fish so the Lion Fish was a solo act later in the tank. Eventually he died but lived a long time !

Yes, crabs are very successful hunters especially with a “captive” audience.

We spent a lot of money in the early years before internet but I have to say it was really great to watch for hours. So relaxing

As with so many of your underwater shots, this is stunning! Love your work, Cathy. We saw a lot of these in Belize and watched the locals go out daily to hunt them. They are so beautiful, for such destructive guys! Did you alter this photo at all? The colors are gorgeous. Love it!

Thanks, Dawn. So glad you liked it. I shifted the white balance a tad because my UW strobe was on the fritz and I was getting more blue than I would have liked. There are lots of reds in UW life, including these guys, so I was happy with the result.

I could watch sea creatures for hours. There’s something so soothing, almost embryonic about it. The lion fish is gorgeous, Cathy. Lucky you to see so up close and personal and to share their world for awhile!

I do feel fortunate to be able to visit that world, Brigitte. It feels primitive and vital – embryonic is a great word to describe the reefs. So much life in those places. Sometimes it’s hard to decide what to photograph! Thanks so much for stopping, my dear!
