Spiny Cactus Fisheye
I thought it might be fun to pull out my Olloclip this week for the challenge. Here are two shots of a small cactus taken with my iPhone 5s and the Olloclip 4-in-1 lenses. The first is a macro shot and the second a shot using the fisheye lens. Bear in mind that the cactus and pot are only about 6 inches high and 5 inches wide. The mosaic table (which I did several years ago) is 48 inches in diameter. Isn’t it amazing what the right lens can do?

Very interesting info about the lenses and the sizes. The table shot is interesting in many ways, but something about the first pic touches me. I think the depth.

I like it: up close and personal with pretty pricks, Cathy, unlike the other, infinitely more annoying kind. And very nice art direction with the cactus on the mosaic table. Love the mosaic tiling by you!

Love that, V – pretty pricks! I designed and made that mosaic table several years ago and it sits in our breakfast room – we use it most days. It’s a fun piece of artwork that’s also functional.

I should really read up on my phone’s capabilities. People (like you!) capture lovely photos with their iPhones all the time. Maybe one of these days I’ll study up on it. My photography could use all the help it can get…

I use a special set of lenses that fit over the camera lens on the phone, Carrie. It’s called an Olloclip and I liked it so much that I got a new one when I got the new 5s (well not so new now.) While I do have a fisheye and macro lenses for my larger cameras, this thing is so tiny that it fits in my purse or a pocket and allows me to take better photos with my phone when I don’t have my Nikon or Olympus with me. Amazing what technology can do these days, isn’t it?

Cathy, I love the table and the photo! I’m wondering did you get a macro lens for your iPhone? I use my iPhone a lot and have wondered about lenses for it. It’s not my forte- tech,but I know I could be doing more with this phone/camera. Wonderful entry!

Hi Dawn. Thanks so much! Yes, I have a tiny set of lenses that fit over the camera lens on my iPhone 5s. It’s called an Olloclip and it has two macros, a wide-angle and a fisheye – all for about $70. They’re so tiny, you can carry them in your pocket. They even have a set of telephoto lenses (which I had for my 4s but haven’t invested in for the new phone – didn’t find that I used them all that much. Check it out: http://www.olloclip.com

Thanks Cathy! I will definitely look into getting these. I love my SLR/Nikon, but I seem to take it with me less and less… but always have my iPhone with me. Sad, but I might as well accept the march of time. 🙂

I agree, Dawn. Although I will say that I take one of my two major cameras with me a lot, I don’t always have them when I want to photograph something. The iPhone has a relatively nice camera and when you add the Olloclip to your repertoire, you have a powerful set of tools. What it cost me for the lenses for the Olympus and the Nikon (different size sensors on the cameras so totally different lenses for each) would pay for an Olloclip for most of my close blogging friends! And really, the Olloclip is tiny!

I’ve dreamed of the Olloclip macro for my iPhone for a long time. Recently I discovered the Camera+ app, which has a macro function that works very nicely, and at less than three bucks fits much better into my budget! 🙂 Your fisheye photo is very interesting as it relates to scale. I’d never have guessed that table was 48″ across. The little cactus looks HUGE!

I know. It does look huge! I was really surprised when I took the shot. I learned something about fisheyes with this exercise! I do like the Olloclip a lot, but I’ll check out Camera+. The tools we now have available are amazing aren’t they? Thanks, Leon.
