Weekly Photo Challenge – Reward

Early Morning Reward

Early Morning Reward

Last summer, Peter and I took a road trip to South Dakota. I wanted to capture the beauty of Badlands National Park on “film,” so the day after arriving in Wall, SD we got up early to explore this wild country. Shortly after entering the park, we rounded a large sweeping curve in the road and were greeted by a bighorn sheep surveying her domain. She quietly rested here while I photographed her – our reward for getting up early!

I’ve been to the Badlands twice, but I’ve never seen a bighorn sheep just waiting for someone to snap its picture. Nice photo!

What a great shot and wonderful surprise. I love goats and sheep. They have such expressive faces and ebullient personalities! He (or she) is obviously letting you know, you’re in the Badlands now and look at me–I’m the boss of this “mountain.” Seriously, Cathy it’s one of my dreams to have a goat farm. I just love goats and sheep. Happy Weekend!

I love goats too, Brigitte. I have several clients (in my P.T. practice) who raise Nigerian pigmy goats. When the babies are born, they will often share videos of them in their first few hours – unbelievably cute! Happy weekend to you, too!

  4. That’s a terrific “gotcha shot” Cathy! Your subject looks like he or she was wondering, “Who’s down there?”

You’re right, V. She seemed to be slightly curious about my presence but didn’t feel the need to move. I took several shots of her at different angles and she just watched me as I moved. Oh, by the way, the way you can tell the gender of a Bighorn sheep is by their horns. The females have the short horns as seen in this shot. Males have very large horns that curl backwards towards their necks. It’s always fun to see them out here.

Gorgeous. It’s been so long since I’ve visited South Dakota. I always wanted to take my kids there to see the Badlands, but we never gotten around to it. Maybe someday.
