Weekly Photo Challenge – Victory

Victory

Victory

I mentioned in my post on October 30 that I had done an afternoon of mentoring at the Cathy Church Underwater Photography School on Grand Cayman two weeks prior. I asked my teacher to help me understand lighting better and show me how to use my new strobe. She did just that and I quickly came up to speed during our dive together. As I went solo during the diving for the rest of the week, I felt a sense of victory and I think I “got” it.

Here’s a shot of some feather dusters sitting on a shipwreck and I’m very pleased with the lighting.

  1. Cathy, you definitely “got it” and we’re so glad to see the results of that victory so often.

Thank you, Amy. The use of an underwater strobe had eluded me, so it was great to get the tutoring. Now I’m ready to tackle the Nikon Speedlight that I’ve had for some time and also didn’t quite “get!”

When I first opened the email with this photo, I thought it was a bouquet of flowers! It’s gorgeous. You constantly surprise and amaze me with your photography.

Thanks so much, Mary. They do look like flowers and they are really beautiful in the underwater setting. Usually they’re on a coral head, so it was fun to capture them sitting on the shipwreck, nicely isolated and ready for their portrait!

  8. That photo is both glorious and victorious! But is it weird that I kind of want to dust the shipwreck? 😉

The light here really is beautiful and looks very natural. This was with your strobe? Great job!

Hi Leon! Yes, I used the strobe for this. What I learned about TTL flash metering is that I can play with F-stop and shutter speed pretty much at will and the camera adjusts the flash. The higher the shutter speed, the darker the background as long as the subject is illuminated by the strobe. So many shots look like they were taken at night, when, in fact they’re taken in the middle of the day.

Also, I think this one looks particularly natural because I placed the strobe above the feather dusters so it created a feeling of sunlight on them. But also gave them some three-dimensionality. Does that make sense?
