Weekly Photo Challenge – Abstract

Elephant Ear Coral

Elephant Ear Coral

There are so many wonderful abstract surfaces on coral reefs. The coral creatures arrange themselves in colonies of swirls, nodules and sometimes they even look like the human brain. They’re usually named for the shapes that they seem to represent.

When I scuba dive, I’m often found perched over a coral head attempting to photograph some small, beautiful invertebrate, but sometimes when I can’t find one, I’ll focus my lens on the coral instead.

Elephant ear coral is mostly found clinging to the sides of shear underwater walls and underneath shelves in the reef and many are quite large. These specimens spanned several feet.

  5. Cathy, is this a detail of a specimen or a specimen in full size? Whichever it is, it’s definitely a glimpse of nature I’d only catch via your lens. This picture could multitask as abstract art.

Good question, V. I’d say it’s somewhere in between. I composed the shot to capture a couple of different shapes, sizes and colors so what you’re actually seeing is several elephant ear corals in part. And I agree, it sure seemed abstract to me!

  9. I have spent most of my life wanting to dive, Cathy. There are several reasons it may never be possible, but I still long for it. As a child I wanted to BE Jacques Cousteau. That was my sincere dream. Not being able to do it so far, but managing only to snorkel whenever possible, I so look forward to every single underwater photo you share! It is icing on that cake that you are such a talented photographer, who brings depth and perspective to each shot! You know I’ve got mad love for what you do, and the wonderful person you are… this is another great shot, thanks for taking us all with you! oxx

Awww, Dawn. Thank you! So glad you enjoy the UW shots! I’m so glad you get to snorkel – doing anything to be able to observe the reefs and those amazing creatures is so special! Have a great week!
      Hugs,
      Cathy
