Weekly Photo Challenge – Look Up

The Grotto

The Grotto

Here’s a shot looking straight up to the sky from the bottom of the “Grotto” – a natural amphitheater on the banks of the Colorado River in Canyonlands National Park near Moab, Utah. The Grotto is the site for several music concerts held during the Moab Music Festival every year. I have been fortunate enough to attend two of these concerts in one of the most beautiful settings on Earth!

Now listening to great music in this venue must be sweet for the soul. Great pic, Cathy. This is one for a canvas on a stark white wall. Love it.

Thanks, Brigitte. I actually printed a metal print that was 16″ x 24″ and it sold last fall in Estes Park. Pretty dramatic! And yes, I think it would look really good on a stark white wall.

The venue is an amazing place for classical music. They do beautiful chamber music and bring in a 6 foot Steinway seventeen miles up the river on a jet boat!

  8. Great use of black and white, Cathy! The acoustics there must be extraordinary.

    • Cathy Ulrich says:

Thanks, V. While the color shot is very interesting with the complimentary colors of orange rock and blue sky, I think the black and white is much more dramatic. And yes, the acoustics are amazing. It’s completely silent in there with no background noise, being so far away from civilization (about twenty miles from anything!). They play chamber music and bring in a 6-foot Steinway.

Beautiful, Cathy. I love the way the B&W shows off the textures of the rocks, but I can’t help wondering what the color version looked like. Are those rocks reddish or just boring beige?

    • Cathy Ulrich says:

Thanks, Leon. The rocks are very red/orange, so the complimentary colors show a serious contrast between rocks and sky, but when I looked at it in the editing process, I felt that this was a distraction from the movement and texture. I call this piece “Depths” because I think it shows the contrast between the light at the top and the bottom. That doesn’t show up as well in color, it think.

      Have a great week!

  17. Generally I’m a color, and underwater fan, but this is so captivating! The contrast of the dark swirls, nooks and crannies, against the other-worldly cloud swirls, is just stunning! It captures something I can’t put my finger on, but it leaves me spellbound. Love this, Cathy!

Thank you so much, Dawn. I’ve gotten some recognition in the photography world with this piece and while it’s nice in color, it is one of those shots that works really well in black and white. As always, thank you for your kind comments and enjoy your family from Israel!
