I shot these sponges because I enjoyed their edges! This shot was taken while diving in Little Cayman on Bloody Bay Wall. We had a wonderful time diving from the live-aboard boat – The Cayman Aggressor IV last October.

To me, amazing how these sponges resemble pottery. Good catch as I haven’t seen anything like this before.

Hi Frank! They do look like pottery. We also see many other different species – some of the quite colorful!

Thank you, Mary. Sponges are so cool! Some look like pottery, some like big barrels, some like delicate vases. All fascinating.

Thank you, Janet. There are so many “other-worldly” things to photography on the reefs! 🙂

These particular tube sponges do look like pottery, Leon! We see many varieties of tube, barrel and vase sponges on the reefs in the Caribbean, and they make for good photographing subject matter!

So that’s what sponges look like in the deep sea; not anything like what I use to scrub a pot.

Hi V! Your comment sparked my interest and I went to Wikipedia to see if I could discern the difference between the sponges we see on the reefs in the Caribbean and kitchen sponges. Well, I guess there are about 10,000 different species of sponges, and the kitchen sponge is chosen for that purpose because it doesn’t have silica in its tissues, making it soft and pliable. The ones we see on the reefs are mostly tube sponges (like the ones I shot here) and barrel sponges. They come in many different colors, shapes and sizes, but I guess they’re not useful household purposes. Hope you’re doing well!

Thanks for filling me in on the facts of sponges! I am doing well. Milton and I are both very psyched about the upcoming New York Film Festival and the launch of the new theater season. So much to see!
