Here’s a shot of Devil’s Backbone in Loveland, Colorado – just south of my home. Taken at sunset, long shadows betray the change from day to night. Golden grasses tell their story as the seasons change from the last days of Autumn to the days when Winter’s snows arrive.

Thanks so much, Mary. It is interesting to see how different people interpret the challenge. And yes, this rock formation does have a skeleton-like quality to it. And it’s a beautiful hike!

I recently visited my sister in Castle Rock. It is so gorgeous where you guys live. I fell absolutely in love with the scenery. It was far too short of a visit (Labor Day weekend). Wish I could’ve seen more.

Thanks, Carrie. Yes, I am so fortunate to live in such a beautiful place. Castle Rock is really beautiful as are the mountains a little south of there in Colorado Springs. Have you every done the cogwheel railroad up to the top of Pikes Peak, Carrie? Now that is stunning!

No, but I’d love to. I’ve only been there twice, and both times for short family get-togethers. I’d love to stay longer and explore.

Beautiful imagery, Cathy. Devil’s Backbone is a rather chilling name for this impressive and gorgeous landscape, but it does have plenty of bumps and ridges and twists to it, doesn’t it? Happy weekend!

Hey Brig! It is a chilling name, but you’re right, beautiful. It is county owned open space with fantastic hiking trails. Happy Weekend to you, friend!

What an appropriately named picturesque location, Cathy! I’m feeling the change in the air over here, but the scenery is not as wide open and spectacular as yours. It’s more narrow closed and crowded, especially with Francis in town.

I bet it has been interesting with the Pope’s visit, V. It’s still pretty warm here (low 80s) but cooling down much more at night.

Francis seems like a truly caring man, and a million percent improvement over Benedict, who I utterly despised, but I kept far away from all the brouhaha that made every place he visited utter madness.
It’s starting to feel like fall over here. No complaints from me about that!

Thanks, Dawn! It really is an epic landscape. I’m constantly reminded at how worth it it is to get there during that golden hour around sunset/sunrise for these as well. The color of the light is so awesome and I love the long shadows.

I couldn’t agree more. When I am in the mountains late/early in the day, or the woods or near the water… the colors and textures seem to pop. This photo is especially gorgeous. How far from your place?

It’s about ten miles south of us.
